Accelerated Algebra 1

Accelerated Algebra 1 focuses on four critical areas in greater depth: (1) using units and relationships between quantities; (2) reasoning with equations and expressions; (3) analyzing and using linear, exponential, and quadratic functions; and (4) interpreting and displaying data using descriptive statistics. Students also have the opportunity to study absolute value inequalities, parallel and perpendicular lines, matrices to solve systems of equations, combinations and permutations, and rational expressions. Advanced Jazz Band (The Rhythmaires)

Also known as, ā€œThe Rhythmaires,ā€ the advanced jazz ensemble is a performance- oriented class, and students will be required to attend all rehearsals and performances. It is required to be registered for Fall band and either Blue or White band to be a member of the Advanced Jazz Ensemble. Students will learn several jazz styles from Dixieland on up to todayā€™s modern jazz styles. The art of improvisation will be explored with an emphasis on every student being able to perform a solo. Advanced Placement Biology

This course meets every day for 1 semester and every other day the other semester. Advanced Placement (AP) Biology is a rigorous and demanding course, which is the equivalent to a two-semester college introductory biology course. Advanced Placement Psychology

Advanced Studio Art: Digital Media

Assistant Teacher Elementary/Middle School Education

Business Internship

The High School of Businessā„¢ Internship requirement provides students the opportunity to see first-hand how business executives function, interact, and put into use the concepts taught in the High School of Businessā„¢ program and academic courses. Students are required to observe a high-level business executive (vice-president, sr.-level marketing manager, certified financial planner, sales manager. etc.) for a minimum of 40 hours with an additional 20 hours of documented work on their final project. Color Guard

Have you ever wanted to throw a rifle or swing a flag? This class is for you! The color guard is a vital component of the marching band. Independent Studies

Independent Study may be coordinated through the Counseling Office when extenuating circumstances do not allow the student to take the class as scheduled. Students must obtain written approval from the principal, counselor, and instructor. Independent Study courses will NOT take the place of core graduation requirements, AP courses or World Language courses. In order to earn credit in a course taken through the independent study option, a student must be under the supervision of a teacher. The student must have successfully completed a minimum of 60 hours (as verified by the instructor) of class work for .5 credits, or have completed a minimum of 120 hours for 1.0 credit. An Independent Study Application, available through the Counseling Office, must be completed, with all required signatures, prior to the semester in which the student plans to take a course via independent study. Independent study students will be graded on a pass/fail basis.

Intermediate Algebra

Intermediate Jazz Band (Jazzology)

Also known as ā€œJazzology,ā€ the intermediate jazz ensemble is a performance-oriented class, and students will be required to attend all rehearsals and performances. It is required to be registered for Fall Band and either Blue or White band to be a member of the Intermediate Jazz Ensemble. Leadership

Lifetime Activities

Emphasis will be on total body conditioning. This class will incorporate a variety of workout styles and will also have an emphasis on individualized physical activities that can be carried out for a lifetime. Marching Band

The Trojan Marching Band has been the cornerstone of the band program since 1922. The goal of the marching band is to perform music at the highest level possible and have fun at the same time. Students will hone their skills on band instruments with emphasis on technique and fundamentals. The marching band will prepare an entertaining field show and per- form at football games, parades and festivals around Colorado. In October, the marching band becomes a concert band and will perform a Halloween concert and a winter concert in December. Attendance at performances is required. Mariachi Band

This course is designed for students who want to learn to play an instrument used in mariachi. Little or no prior experience is required for this course. Instruments taught in this class include guitar, vihuela, and guitarron. Students at this level of Spanish are well on their way to fluency! Spanish 4 provides students the opportunity to develop advanced language skills. We will read authentic literature, study art and the history and geography of the Spanish speaking world, and master more complex grammar structures. Spanish for Spanish Speakers 1

This course is designed specifically to meet the needs of students who speak Spanish at home or elsewhere and so would not benefit from a Spanish as a foreign language class. A heavy emphasis on reading and writing skills in Spanish along with spelling and grammar lessons. Native/heritage students will develop strategic Spanish reading skills, while investigating the literary genres of expository essay, myths, fables, legends, poetry, short stories, and novels. Students will produce writing in various formats and genres including well-developed paragraphs, literary response items, expository essays, short stories or narratives, while continuing to develop skills in the correct use of grammar, spelling, punctuation, and capitalization. Spanish is the language to be used 100% of the time in class for instruction and interaction between students.

This course is designed for students who already speak, read and write fairly well in Spanish, but still need help with vocabulary, spelling and writing for specific purposes. We will continue the grammar overview which began in Spanish for Spanish Speakers 1. Particular attention will be given throughout the course to spelling, accent marks and expanding students vocabulary beyond their particular region of origin. Students will also read about Hispanics from around the world that have gained fame from their literary achievements. As Spanish is a language spoken on several continents, students will learn to speak and write in standard Spanish. This course will help students prepare to enter into Spanish IV and AP Spanish classes.

Student Council

Students cannot register for Student Council (StuCo), but must interview and be appointed to the class. This class is a leadership class in which the students will develop skills that include organization, time management, event planning, and other leadership skills. Student Council is also in charge of planning school events, hosting community service pro- jects and attending team-building events such as leadership conferences. This is a great opportunity to develop your leadership skills and to get involved, but let it be known that the normal classroom requisites of responsibility, accountability, and work ethic very much apply. If you are interested in Student Council, you need to pick up an application from the main office or talk to Mr. Kingsbury in December in the second semester. Studio Photography

Students will learn to use materials, tools and techniques for color, digital photography. Specifics include: exposure with a Digital SLR camera and advanced/experimental Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom tools and techniques. The entire semester is digital. Appreciation of photography as an art form and mode of communication is stressed. This class is for students interested in pursuing photography further and who are self-motivated. The reading for this course is often technical; there- fore, better than average reading skills are recommended. A DSLR camera is not required, but beneficial to have.

Trojan Tech Team

Students cannot register for Trojan Tech Team, but must apply and be appointed to the class. It is intended for tech savvy students who are interested in supporting teachers and students with technology. Some of the jobs include setting up iPads with new students, creating screencasts and documentation, exploring technology for the Maker-space and assisting teachers with lessons that involve a lot of technology. Unified Percussion

The Unified Percussion Ensemble connects students with and without intellectual disabilities. The ensemble is comprised of student mentors with previous experience in a music ensemble, and 11th and 12th-grade students in the Exceptional Learning program. The ensemble members and student mentors will work collaboratively to develop the skills needed to perform memorized shows for events including, but not limited to, home football games, pep rallies, SVVSD Band Night, and other performances in the community. Participation in Unified Percussion Ensemble carries with it the responsibility of attendance at all scheduled rehearsals and performances.

Video Production

This course is designed to acquaint students with the basics in the area of video production and to give them experience in producing a daily broadcast of school announcements, news, and short films. Wealth Management

This project-based financial literacy and investment course develops student understanding and skills in such areas as personal finance, types of investment, the stock market, and stock valuation. Students acquire an understanding and appreciation of the need for personal financial management and investing. To encourage immediate implementation of financial literacy and investment skills, Wealth Management utilizes an on-going investment project for course delivery and reinforcement. White Band

World Geography/History

World Studies explore timeless issues and themes through literature and history. Yearbook

This course is open to students interested in producing the school yearbook. Staff members must show strong skills in writing, photography, and/or graphic design. Students should have excellent attendance, be able to work well as part of a team, and be able to meet deadlines. Staff members will have the opportunity to design and produce every facet of the book in accordance with that yearā€™s theme. Students will have the chance to learn digital photography, graphic design, and desktop publishing skills using the Adobe Creative Cloud Suite as part of the yearbook class. Yoga / Nutrition

Yoga is about the union of each studentsā€™ own mind, body, and spirit. As a physical education class, our sessions will help make the body strong and flexible while improving the function of the respiratory, circulatory, digestive, and hormonal systems. On the physical level, students will practice yoga postures (asanas) that are designed to tone, strengthen, and align the body. On the mental level, students will use breathing techniques (pranayama) and meditation (dyana) to quiet, clarify, and discipline their minds. Thus, in addition to physical and mental benefits we will involve nutrition education to enhance health and prevent disease.
